Aubrey Beardsley (August 21, 1827– March 16, 1898)


*Background
-Born in Brighton.
-Attended Bristol Grammar School in 1884
-was an art editor for the first four editions and produced many illustrations for the magazine
-Closely aligned with Aestheticism, the British counterpart of Decadence and Symbolism.
-Most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images and the grotesque erotica
-Die in Menton, France at March 16, 1898 of Turbeculosis.
-A public character as well as a private eccentric

- Most of his work is black and white
-Curved lines
-Patterned surface & contrasting voids
-Flatness of picture-plane
-Art Nouveau style

-He said, "I have one aim — the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing."
